The Foundation approved in 2014 a grant of approximately £580,000 for the City of Glasgow College, which would part fund the development of a ship’s engine room within the College’s new Riverside Campus. The ship’s engine room will provide a realistic training environment for marine engineers and cadet officers, which will give these students an insight into their role when they eventually go to sea.

The College recently took delivery of the 20 tonne ships engine. The MAK designed and built engine will be the vital component in what is expected to be the most modern ship’s engine room in a college in the UK. The engine can be used as the main engine for a coastal vessel or as a diesel generator for a large marine vessel but in this situation will be used to drive an alternator instead of a ships propeller. Supplied, delivered and fitted by Imps UK Ltd of Lincoln, the fully functioning engine room should be ready for its first students by mid December 2015.

Students will use the ships engine room to get hands-on experience of all the aspects of operating an engine, and other essential marine engineering equipment. Students will:

– Prepare the ship’s machinery and carry out statutory and mandatory checks.

– Carry out regular watch keeping duties and to deal with emergency situations.

– Carry out planned maintenance and breakdown repairs

– Become familiar with engine room systems.

– Become familiar with IMO regulations, Safety Management Systems

– Develop communications and team working skills within the engine room environment.
